What are Eye Exams?

Conventional vision acuity tests are widely recognized and often mandated in educational and professional settings. They are also required when applying for a driver's license. But a vision screening doesn't mean you are clear of eye disease. An acuity evaluation simply won't give a total look at your eye health. Therefore, having a complete eye exam every year is critical.

At Advanced Vision & Achievement Center, our highly skilled optometrists — Dr. Neha Amin LaCorte and Dr. Mary Hardy — conduct comprehensive eye evaluations encompassing a range of vital tests to ensure the health of your eyes. These tests are crucial, as vision-threatening diseases like macular degeneration may develop without warning. We recommend scheduling regular annual check-ups at our practice in Phoenix, AZ. If it has been over a year since your last comprehensive exam or you have detected any potential eye or vision concerns, don't hesitate to contact us today.

What Happens During an Eye Exam?

When you arrive for your appointment, we need you to bring your glasses and contacts and a current list of prescription and over-the-counter medications you are taking.

Most eye evaluations at Advanced Vision & Achievement Center last approximately 30 – 90 minutes. Your testing will begin with a routine vision test to determine how sharp your acuity is. If the eye chart test finds that you need corrective lenses, we will probably perform refraction testing to determine your lens prescription. To do this, you will look into a phoropter device to identify what images you see as distinct or blurry.

Then, a member of our team will do a visual field test, sometimes called a perimetry test, which evaluates the range of your peripheral vision and assists in catching certain other eye conditions.

After the visual field test, we might test how well your eyes work together by using a cover test. As its name suggests, we cover each eye individually and ask you to stare at a certain spot to see how your eyes work together. We will also ask you to be very still and track a penlight with just your eyes.

Next, your doctor will most likely perform a test that can find color vision limitations and help in finding other eye conditions. To wrap up, you will have a slit lamp test to get an enlarged, comprehensive 3D view of certain parts of your eyes, including the eyelids, cornea, conjunctiva, iris, and lenses.

It is really helpful to enlarge the pupils to more easily examine the condition of the retina, retinal blood vessels, optic nerve, and the macula, as well as to look for signs of glaucoma. We might need to dilate your pupils to complete more tests, depending on your age and the initial reason for your visit.

Optomap Retinal Photos

Optomap retinal photos are a cutting-edge diagnostic tool used in ophthalmology to capture wide-angle images of the retina, providing a comprehensive view of the back of the eye. Unlike traditional dilation methods, Optomap technology enables the imaging of nearly 200 degrees of the retina in a single capture, allowing for a more detailed examination without the need for uncomfortable dilation drops. This noninvasive procedure is quick, takes only a few minutes, and offers our team at Advanced Vision & Achievement Center a detailed visualization of the retina's intricate structures. Optomap retinal photos aid in the early detection and monitoring of various eye conditions, including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. This technology enhances patient comfort and compliance with regular eye exams, promoting proactive eye care and early intervention when necessary.

I always look forward to seeing Dr. Amin. She is very thorough and pleasant. Was pleased that Dr. Amin understood that stronger lenses were needed to avoid eye strain and headaches. Appreciate her time to give another eye exam, which was much needed to resolve my concerns.

Prioritize Vision Health

By and large, patients aren't concerned with their eye health until a vision impairment occurs. However, eye health extends further than simply vision. We invite you to schedule comprehensive eye exams for yourself and your family with Dr. Amin or Dr. Hardy at their office in Phoenix, AZ. Advanced Vision & Achievement Center uses innovative equipment and techniques to examine your eyes so any concerns will be caught and treated early.

Who Needs a Diabetic Evaluation?

Anyone with diabetes should have a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year. Diabetes can cause significant damage to the blood vessels in the retina, leading to a condition called diabetic retinopathy. If left untreated, this damage can result in blindness. An eye examination allows Dr. LaCorte and Dr. Hardy to detect early signs of diabetic retinopathy and intervene before the condition progresses. Additionally, people with diabetes may also be at an increased risk of developing eye diseases such as glaucoma and cataracts. Please contact our office in Phoenix, AZ immediately if you notice any changes in your vision or experience symptoms such as blurred vision, floaters, or difficulty seeing at night.
