What Happens During an Eye Exam?
When you arrive for your appointment, we need you to bring your glasses and contacts and a current list of prescription and over-the-counter medications you are taking.
Most eye evaluations at Advanced Vision & Achievement Center last approximately 30 – 90 minutes. Your testing will begin with a routine vision test to determine how sharp your acuity is. If the eye chart test finds that you need corrective lenses, we will probably perform refraction testing to determine your lens prescription. To do this, you will look into a phoropter device to identify what images you see as distinct or blurry.
Then, a member of our team will do a visual field test, sometimes called a perimetry test, which evaluates the range of your peripheral vision and assists in catching certain other eye conditions.
After the visual field test, we might test how well your eyes work together by using a cover test. As its name suggests, we cover each eye individually and ask you to stare at a certain spot to see how your eyes work together. We will also ask you to be very still and track a penlight with just your eyes.
Next, your doctor will most likely perform a test that can find color vision limitations and help in finding other eye conditions. To wrap up, you will have a slit lamp test to get an enlarged, comprehensive 3D view of certain parts of your eyes, including the eyelids, cornea, conjunctiva, iris, and lenses.
It is really helpful to enlarge the pupils to more easily examine the condition of the retina, retinal blood vessels, optic nerve, and the macula, as well as to look for signs of glaucoma. We might need to dilate your pupils to complete more tests, depending on your age and the initial reason for your visit.
