Vision and Learning
Recently, the AOA has worked with Congress to create legislation aimed at making vision health a priorty in school-age children nationwide. In response, Congress passed the Vision Care for Kids Act of 2007 to establish a federal grant program focusing on Texas, to enhance children's vision skills. Currently thirty-two states require vision screenings for students, but twenty-nine do not requires a complete eye exam for students sho fail the screenings.
When two eyes do not work together as a team, schoolwork can take much longer to complete. This can mimic as attention deficit disorder (ADD), introverted behavior, or disruptive behavior. Before labeling a child with behavioral issues, look for these clues...avoiding near work, poor attention span, poor retention of what they read, complaints of headaches, or eye discomfort. Have the child's vision checked, it might save them from years of frustration and change their whole outlook on life.
